MALACCA HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY CEILING COLLAPSES

Sunday August 1, 2010

Close call for students as old school’s library roof caves in

By MARTIN CARVALHO
malacca@thestar.com.my

MALACCA: It was a close call for some students of the 184-year-old Malacca High School when the roof of its library came crashing down.

Although no injuries were reported during the incident early yesterday morning as the usually packed library is closed on weekends, there were students and teachers busy celebrating Canteen Day and attending the school’s Parents and Teachers Association meeting at the country’s second oldest school.

The incident is believed to have happened sometime between Friday night and before dawn yesterday and the damage was discovered at 8am by a general worker.

State education, science and technology committee chairman Datuk Yaakub Md Amin said the affected section of the building would be closed temporarily to allow the state public works department to assess the extent of damage and repair costs.

“We will seal off not only the library but also the teachers and staff rooms located within the same building.

“There is a danger the entire roof may collapse as the timber rafters are affected by wood rot due to termite infestation and moisture following the recent wet spell,” he said.

He added that signs of wood rot were spotted a day earlier by the school authorities who immediately alerted state education officials.

The school is more than 180 years old but the single-storey structure where the library is housed was constructed in the 1940s.

The last major renovation done to this section of the building was carried out in 1971, he said.

He said repairs would cost about RM100,000 and would be carried out during the school break in September to allow the library to be opened for the new session next year.

Meanwhile, state MCA chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo, who was invited to open the school’s PTA meeting, said it was fortunate that no injuries were reported in the incident.

Gan, who is also state public works committee chairman, said he would instruct state public works department to carry out safety inspections of old buildings at several schools in the city.

MALACCA HIGH 3 BATCHES TO ORGANISE JOINT REUNION ON 9/10.10.10

A joint Malacca High Reunion for Year 1975, 1976 and 1977 batches is being planned. This Reunion is to be celebrated on 9th. October and ending on 10th. October 2010 ( 10.10.10 )

A meeting was recently held in Malacca in early May 2010 to discuss this unique gathering and event. Soon, a formal email will be posted out to the respective batches informing them of this event.

A venue has been suggested eg at the Rotunda of Malacca Club at Klebang Besar. Parking will not be a problem there and if the function is held near the poolside, it will certainly be a good site to view the evening sunset over the Straits of Malacca.

For our classmates and friends who are keen to attend this one of a kind reunion, you should set aside and blank off this date in your diary.

For my part, I will try to post any latest news and views on this reunion. I for one, will be there to meet up with my juniors whom I have not met since 1975.

Be seeing you there. Enjoy and Meliora Hic Sequamur.

MHS 55 REUNION BASH GATHERS STEAM

After the formation of the MHS 55 Reunion Bash 2011 in the last week of April 2010, a lot of emails have sped across the globe. Facebook messages with photos (old ones) have been also been posted for everyone to view and comment. A new blog was also published.

By the end of this month, after the feedback from all around the globe, the Pro-tem committee will fix the date. Once the date is fixed, we will go ahead with the venue, menu, programme etc. and more importantly, getting your wish list of meeting up with our mentors and teachers. To trace them and inviting to attend our bash will not be difficult. For this, we require our mates in Malacca to assist and volunteer their services.

For our long lost friends, through our network, we hope to re-connect with them via email, hand-phones or even via Facebook or Twitter.

Let us make this coming Bash something to remember by and enjoy our ties for the next 50 years.

All excited over ‘5555’ reunion

The reunion fever is on for the old boys of the Malacca High School (batch of 68-72/74) most of whom were also pupils of the Bandar Hilir English School (BHES) (62-67).

The old boys, who were born in 1955 and are 55 or will turn 55 this year, are all set for their ‘5555’ Golden Year Big Bash on Saturday.

The event, to mark their “official retirement age’” will be held at the Tiara Golf Resort in Malacca in grand style with great food, lively entertainment and fitting music of the 60’s and 70’s performed by popular pub-circuit duo Vernon and Fats.

Close to 90 of them have already confirmed attendance, including some who would be accompanied by their wives. Several old boys will fly in from Australia and Britain for the occasion.
All set for the big bash: Members of the organising team with the reunion banner at the school last week.

About 20 teachers, now mostly in their 70’s and 80’s will also be there to share their reminisces of the group and make the occasion a more memorable one.

Larry Yong, spokesman for the organising committee, said a tele-conferencing was also being planned to enable several old boys living abroad but unable to make it back for the bash, to virtually join the reunion.

“The response for the ‘5555’ Golden Year Big Bash has been tremendous so far. But we hope that the remaining old boys and the batch of old girls who did their Form Six in MHS will also come on board for this historic happening,” he said after the committee members held their preparatory meeting at the school last week.

Details of the gathering have been posted of the BHES 62-67 & MHS 68-72/74 community set up on Facebook to keep the group connected.

Yong said before the bash on Saturday, the group would make nostalgic visits to the two schools to relive their old memories and share stories of their three-decade old schooldays.

The golfers in the group, however, will get things swinging a day earlier.

They will play a round of golf at the Tiara Golf Resort this Friday.

More information on the bash can be obtained from these committee members based in Kuala Lumpur/ Petaling Jaya: Yoong Voon Chow (012-309 6276), Charlie Chia Lui Meng (012-289 3887) Cheong Koon Aik (012-213 1481), Larry Yong 019-332 5592), Ivan Low Chan Tian (012-601 8230) and Willy Leong Yam Wei (019-208 2093).
